Rodent Control
Effective rodent control is critical to reduce feed losses and contamination, prevent structural damage and minimise disease risk. Rodenticides are now known to cause primary and secondary poisoning in non-target species, so control programmes should incorporate several methods, with bait treated as a last resort. As bait is so critical in rodent control, the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) established a new UK stewardship regime and rules in April 2016, to assure HSE that rodenticides are being used responsibly, to increase their sustainability.
This Farming Note looks at:
• The character traits of rats and mice
• Integrated rodent management
• Different control technique options
• Recent changes to the rodent control legislation
Issued July 2016.
