Alternative Grazing Forages

Grazing mixtures that can potentially improve forage quality and output in more challenging climatic conditions were sown at Bridge Farm in 2010

Varieties in the grazing mixtures range from deep rooting chicory and various herbal species, to New Zealand bred cool season hybrids which grow well in cooler and wetter conditions at either end of the grazing season.

The trial plots are grazed by Bridge Farm's dairy herd as part of their rotational grazing system and are assessed for:

• Yield and feed value/mineral content
• Persistence and grazing preference
• Effect on the soil structure
