Soil Carbon and Organic Matter

Part 3 of the Sustainable Soil Management Series

Management of organic matter in soil is a specific area targeted by cross compliance. Proposed regulations, effective from January 2015, will require appropriate crop rotation practices and tillage techniques to maintain SOM. Building SOM is a long-term process but can be beneficial by; reducing or eliminating tillage, reducing erosion, using cover crops, green manures and organic manures and by soil testing to determine nutrient correction.
